The Roman philosopher and statesman who, awaiting execution on charges of treason, wrote The Consolation of Philosophy, a dialogue in which Lady Philosophy reconciles him to fortune, suffering, and the providence of God. Bridging the classical and medieval worlds, it became one of the most read and beloved books of the Middle Ages and carried ancient wisdom to a Christian age.
