The Italian writer whose Decameron, a collection of a hundred tales told by young Florentines fleeing the Black Death, brought wit, earthiness, and humanity to medieval storytelling. A friend of Petrarch and admirer of Dante, he helped shape Italian prose and influenced generations of writers, Chaucer and Shakespeare among them.
