Major worksMagna Carta
The charter forced upon King John of England by his rebellious barons in 1215, limiting the power of the crown and binding the king himself to the rule of law. Though born of a narrow feudal dispute, its principles, that no one is above the law and that liberties must be protected, became a cornerstone of constitutional government across the English-speaking world.
