The greatest of the Roman poets, author of the Aeneid, the national epic that traces Rome's mythic origins to the Trojan hero Aeneas and his long journey to Italy. Modeled on Homer yet wholly his own, his work became the cornerstone of Latin literature and so revered that later ages cast him as a sage and guide, most famously leading Dante through the underworld.
