The Two Towers - Orthanc in Isengard and Barad-dûr in Mordor. The first part of this book follows Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf moving towards Isengard. The second part follows Frodo, Sam, and Gollum moving towards Mordor. Along the way, the groups encounter trees (ents), elephants (oliphants), and deadly spiders (Shelob). The story had some great twists and turns and has set up the final book masterfully. Now, onto The Return of the King!
